This month I'll be packing up my stuff and heading back to SoCal. Since I'm (still) not working, and my wife's parents are getting older and sicker, AND my son lives out there and was just diagnosed with testicular cancer, my desire to stay here in Colorado never had a chance.

Sigh.

Big yard sales the next couple weeks I guess!

I'm debating how deeply to cut into my tools. For sure I'll keep my Rikon lathe, my bandsaw, and my little Delta miter saw.

I think I'll hang onto my planer (too hard to find a small cheap one that's snipe-free), but my big beautiful tablesaw? Drill press? Portables? GAH!

And all the wood I've collected over the past few years can't come with. I'll keep turning blank sized stuff, but everything else needs to stay here. And finishes and chemicals and paint and...

Sigh. I hate making decisions.
 
Oh, crap. I forgot about my casting stuff! Pressure pot, racks and pipes, molds, compressor?

"Sorry honey, we'll have to leave everything behind. There's only room for my tools in the truck..."
 
Maybe it's a blessing in disguise! Give it time. You will be up and running in no time!

Sorry about all the family issues. I know where you are coming from from. My sister has MS, & Mom almost died from a kidney failure caused by Ibuprofen. But, my job forces me to stay in Denver, so I sit and wait, hoping to never get the calls. I hope all goes well for you in California and things turn out OK.

Let me know if you need someplace to store those tools and all that wood, I am sure I can find them a good home until you can come back and get them! ;)

The tools have to sell to help fund the move. I'm selling the Exploder too (keeping the Saab... Only because the Exploder is worth more!)

Even if we pare things way down, the wife won't let me get rid of EVERYTHING, so it'll cost a minimum of $1500 just to get out there. Then I have to store all the furniture and tools and stuff while we stay at her parent's house until I get a new job. Who knows how long THAT will take.

I suspect I'll be able to at least set up my pen stuff and casting stuff once there, her dad used to be a hardcore woodworker before he got cancer. Perhaps I can inspire him to get back in the shop...
 
Wow! That's a bummer. Too bad you can't just store some of the stuff (friend's garage) until you get a job and can make a trip back to pick it up. The cost of replacing it would be a lot more than the cost of the trip to get it. I have wordworking friends in Castle Rock who snowbird here in AZ. Maybe they could bring some of your stuff here and you could come over and pick it up later? I have a large storage shed.
 
Sorry about the family problems Don. Went through that with my MIL in the spring. Less than a month from the time she was diagnosed to when she was gone. The wife just went and stayed for a couple months.

Tools are a hard decision when you consider cost of replacing vs cost of moving them. Paints and chemicals are another thing. CA. probably won't let you bring them in anyway.

The wife and I have moved 15 times and it's hard at the best of times and never fun. My next one will be to a small leather lined cherry box I have sitting in the living room.
 
I learned a simple truth a while ago. If it does not move itself then it is a thing and things, in the long run, are not important.

Of course, in the last move I convinced my wife that the antique cameras would move if they were not so arthritic.

I sold my antique and vintage cameras before moving out here. I'm glad I did, there was still something of a market at the time.

Sorry for your family troubles.. know you'll take good care of everyone...

I just hope you like Anaheim better than I did... I moved to SoCal in 1965, Huntington Beach, El Segundo, Anaheim and Garden Grove (the house kept getting dirty so I had to move)... I never did develop an affinity for SoCal.... after about 18 months, I moved to Bay Area and stayed 15 years... can't afford it now and much too crowded for my tastes, but loved it while there.

I know about trying to decide what to take and what to leave behind... when we moved to TN in 2005, I had a 26 foot cab over truck, a 20' trailer attached with my pick up on the trailer, the bed of the pick up loaded, all the long things that would fit under the pick up loaded on the trailer and still wound up leaving things behind that I sure could have used in the new shop...

They might be but I'm not one of them so can't say for sure.:smile:
I'ts mostly cheap, just can't see my family having to pay some funeral home several hundred dollars for something I can build for about $30 worth of lumber. Have one for the wife as well, and they are in the living room because they are nice looking boxes and are used to hold photo's at the moment.

I grew up in Stanton, lived in OC most of my life. I moved around the country trying new things, Florida, North Carolina, and finally here in CO. I liked each place, but to be honest I *really* miss the beach. I can't surf anymore (blew out my knee surfing 10 years ago, and it hasn't worked right since,) but I can still bodyboard.

My issue isn't with moving to CA. It's with the conditions under which I'm moving. Flat broke and to go take care of sick people. :frown:

I'll miss the tools, but they can be replaced. I've decided what to keep...

Lathe and the cabinet/stand it's on.
Bandsaw
Miter Saw
Planer
Compressor and casting supplies
Portable tools (biscuit joiner, circ saw, router, etc.)

I think that's it. Everything else has or will be up for sale. Shoot, my dust collector already sold!

Because stuff isn't messed up enough...

A friend of my wife's (and her two psychotic children) have been staying with us to hide from an abusive hubby.

Today she was supposed to get a restraining order, but I just got a call from my wife, "She's staying again tonight... Tell you about it later."

Sigh.

The kids have already broken several things in my house. They're loud and uncontrolled, but I can't turn away someone in the abusive house situation. I grew up in one. . .

When crap hits the fan, it's not from a mouse! It's from a moose!

Sorry to hear of all the bad news. Life has a way of throwing things at you. I live in So Cal and my shop will be open to you if you need a place to hang out. I Live in Tustin which is about 10 to 15 minutes from Anaheim. I travel a bit but when I am home you are welcome to use what I have. PM me if you like and I'll give you my info.:smile:

I'm hoping to inspire my FIL to get back in the shop. He was a hard core woodworker back in the 80's, and even with his bad ticker and cancer, I think he could do some lathe work.

If so, then it's just a matter of clearing out the garage. :biggrin:
