Looks like I need to revisit my epoxy technique

Frustrating, but my own fault. Not enough epoxy, and too aggressive.

If that is the low point of your day... Not too bad. Yup, a lost blank, but I suspect you have plenty more.
We've all been there.

I feel your pain but it could have been worse. It might have been a segmented blank that you had hours invested in.

I don't think it has to do with the glue. It caught. It blew out. Too aggressive and chisel not sharp enough.

You can clearly see there's not much epoxy on the tube, and spots inside the blank with none. I think that was the biggest reason it happened.

I've tried Gorilla Glue, and it just doesn't work for me. I've made dozens of pens with epoxy, and rarely have a problem. I was gluing up 13 blanks, and just got in a hurry.

This looks to me like you didn't put enough Epoxy on the tube, which you agreed might be the case. Here's what I do. I not only apply Epoxy to the tube I also apply Epoxy to the blank, on both ends. It looks like you've just got the glue put on the insertion side and the back of the tube isn't getting any. Try putting it in on both ends and see what happens. That should correct your problem.

I usually apply epoxy inside the blank, in the middle and both ends. I also put it on the tube. I don't know what happened with this one. You can see that some had less epoxy than others. I've successfully turned six of them now, I'll keep taking lighter cuts with the rest.

Here is one that tore out when I trimmed it. You can see how much more epoxy there was.

Exotic Blanks has a good video on gluing a blank, using CA. Insert the tube in one end, reverse and insert all the way. Thanks, Ed!
Edit- Bought GG and crossed it off the list. Too messy and takes too long to cure.

Just having a friendly conversation.....but will dispute that is a glue problem. I have trimmed blanks that came loose from the tube with success. Simply tightened them up and went for it. Blow outs occur mostly from the chisel catching. It will tear a blank apart...wood or acrylic, epoxy or CA. Too aggressive/dull chisel...your culprit. That's my vote. ...............
I like your wood choice. Purpleheart is in a league of it's own.
