I'm not sure if this is even worth bringing to a machine repair shop to get fixed. I have a knockoff of the Rockler Excelsior /Harborfreight midi lathe that I picked up a month ago for $100.

My son uses a MT2 inserts pen press on the lathe (It's made of a hard plastic) Well after pressing a pen, the inserts get stuck. My son was trying to punch it out with the headstock taper punch tool and could get it. I took a couple swings and the taper flies out. He put a mandrel on to turn a pen and now e get a vibration and noise from the headstock. My guess is that while trying to get the MT2 taper out of the headstock, I screwed up a bearing or a machined part. It still spins, but there is a vibration and humming/rubbing noise. Is this a fairly easy fix or do I just scrap the lathe for a new Jet or Nova Comet II Lathe?

I wouldn't scrap anything just yet - try taking apart the works and seeing how easy it is to get at the bearings - I think I read a write-up on how to do that on the Jet (which yours is similar to) - so try reading up on it first.

I hate to toss out machinery because of a small issue - try and get that bearing replaced, and see if that fixes the issue (just use a good bearing, from a good source!)
