Consider the Schmidt 9000. I never use the stock refill, unless is is already upgraded. I suspect you will get more suggestions. But your observation is spot on, it is very important that the quality of the flow of ink be excellent.

What pens does the Schmidt 9000 fit? I make a ton of Slim Lines. I test drive each refill before I complete the pen.

The Schmidt is the "Parker" size. Slim refills are a different kettle of fish.
I believe there are three "sizes": Cross (slimline), Parker, and Rollerball.
I am not an expert on refills!!! Hopefully, others more informed will correct/supplement my response.

Beaufort Pens in the UK have superior refills IMHO.Can not beat quality.

I now order all my refills from Beaufort Ink. Affortable, superior quality and smooth writting. For the Parker refills they have a soft and smooth that are really cool to write with.
