I need to restock some stainless steel stoppers. Up to this point I have only used Ruth Niles ones. I am ordering some other items from a supplier that carries the PSI ones. They end up considerably less expensive due to lower unit price and I'm already paying shipping for the other items. Should I stick with what I am used to ( I kind of like the look of them better) or should I try the PSI ones?

Thanks for any input.

One thing I remember from being an electronics tech in the military. "IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T TRY TO FIX IT)

There was one guy in our unit that if the tech manual said a certain meter should read such & such and if it did not, he would tinker with it till he finally broke something. Even if it worked perfect before, now you would have more issues.

If you are happy with Ruth Niles Stopper (why change)

Another vote for Ruth.

Her stoppers are very well made, and the design is very appealing - your turning ends up sitting fairly close to the top of the bottle, so it is what is seen, unlike some of the other brands that expose a lot of metal.

PSI's black titanium plating looks attractive, but the stoppers I've bought from them exposed too much plated metal. And while I don't have any evidence to support this concern, there is the issue that the plating can come off over time.

So - Ruth's stoppers are more expensive because they are simply better.

I could not agree more. Ruth's are always great. Never had a problem with them. Even used a couple for laser engraving and subjected to some abuse at a bar. Held up very well.

Some how the Chrome on any other bottle stopper will pit when exposed to the acids in wine. Bare in mind that this is if you use them over an extended time.
Now with the Stainless, that shouldn't nor will pitting occur.

With that Invest in Ruth's Stainless Bottle Stoppers.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've used thee stainless from csusa and psi. I like them just fine and would buy again if there was a sale or something especially.

Niles are great. Sometimes you might want a different shape.

I find the Niles stoppers have less of an impact on my table, as they are smaller. I like the bigger bottoms, as they look like more value for the money....

That's just my taste, though - Ruth's stoppers are certainly well made - I just like the style/looks of the bigger cone-shaped ones.

I've looked at Ruth's stoppers and they look great... don't remember, but don't think I've ever used them... I generally guy the PSI SS stoppers because like you, I'm usually buying other things and already paying the shipping... I find that shipping has a strong impact on where, when and what I buy. It can often be 10-20% of your overall cost. And in my former life I was a shipping manager, so I watch shipping costs pretty closely... many vendors make a nice profit on their shipping.

All that was to lead up to this link... I found a wholesaler on the net that sells both chrome plated and SS bottle stoppers and a price much lower than the other vendors... I haven't used them yet as I don't do a lot of bottle stoppers right now and I tend to make the silicone stopper as it's much less expensive and I can keep my pricing lower for my market.

I, like many others, have been VERY satisfied with Ruth Niles's bottle stoppers! NONE of my clients/friends have ever made a negative comment about the stoppers I've turned and have never expressed any problems with the 'S/S metal stoppers'... For the little extra price, why take a chance and go wrong and loose a valuable customer? Safe turning to you all!

What could go wrong with a stainless steel stopper that would cause us to loose a customer? It's a chunk of stainless steel. Has anyone had one from another supplier fail?

Thanks for the link Chuck.

Thanks everyone. I did go ahead and order more of Ruth's stoppers from a Canadian supplier but think that after this I will need to reconsider. At the prices from the supplier in Chuck's link even with shipping to Canada (didn't actually check to make sure they will do that) and the exchange the difference in cost probably comes close to $3/ stopper. That is a huge difference.

I actually make a mix of the silicone stoppers and the stainless steel ones. In my area the silicone ones do sell better because I can offer them at a lower price point. The order I mentioned in an earlier thread was for silicone, stainless steel and even the adjustable stoppers. I am going to stop using the adjustable ones but continue with the other 2 types.

Thanks again for all the input.
