Communication with Dad has been really challenging since his stroke. I was checking on his boat and there were a couple of wing nuts missing. I asked him where they were and got a lot of hand gestures which I could not interpret. I thought that I would have to go to the hardware store. A couple of hours later Mom told me to go check on Dad and that he was out in his truck. I get out there and he holds up a sunglass case and dumps out the wing nuts. He gives me a smart a$$ed look and blows me a raspberry. The wing nuts have been in there for 4 years or more since before his stroke and he knew exactly where they were. He may have lost his ability to speak but his memory certainly has not suffered. The mind is a strange thing.

I have a friend who suffered a stroke. It didn't affect her speech, but she can no longer read. She can recognize letters, but not words.

We can put change on the counter and ask dad to identify a quarter, dime, nickel etc. and he cannot do it. Ask him to give you 42 cents and he counts out a quarter, a nickel, a dime and two pennies. Ask him to identify a ball and he cannot do it, ask him to throw the ball and he picks it up and throws it. He can play cads. It's weird.

As my mother progressed with memory loss she became more difficult. As my in-laws make the same progression (both 93), they have retained their sense of humor and are pleasant to be around. The path they take/is presented to them, is not known. I have appreciated your posts about your Dad, and my thoughts are with you and him.

Nice set of wing nuts!

After a heart operation I told the specialist I could not play the Piano (I never could),shallow joke. In 4 mths my 85th and I have had a lousy memory for names and that is now exasperating people around me.The effects of age here where I live is pronounced in people who were born overseas now living in care have gone back to the language they learned in their youth. With 5 generations of Australian heritage situation normal,we both sustain each other in our independance thankfully.

Big difference from the Slate at School to the Pencil, then the dip pen and so on. Life used to be more simple and basic.

Dianne's stroke in 2014 affected her speech also... she was talking to me at breakfast and suddenly everything she said just turned to gibberish... called ambulance and got her to hospital immediately... after a few days she was speaking normally again, but still stutters and stammers a little still and forgets some words for things... 'course, I forgot words for some things myself and haven't had a stroke.

Jack,
I am so sorry to hear of all of your losses. You guys are certainly suffering far more than anyone should. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
