I had a guy ask me if I could make a letter opener / pen ..... I have yet to see anything that would resemble a pen/opener combo.

Now, keeping in mind I am a less than 6 month old turner, do I DARE venture into the mysterious world of creating my own kits ..... piecing together various components to create a new life=form ????

Hello!
It can be done and I think you should give it a try.
Their are alot of people here that could help you through it.
Good luck!!

Well, the guy that asked about it happens to be a metal worker, used to do tooling for the automotive industry.

After looking at whats available commercially for the letter opener part, I may task him with building me a small letter opener that I can build a cap around and a small 'credit card' pen transmission for the writing instrument end.

It will be interesting, it wont be a kitless construction, but I do enjoy a challenge !!!

I'm in the process of doing just that. Tricky and very slow. A lot of breakage and "new words". I'll post when I finally get one done

thanks Doc! I knew I wasnt alone !!!! I am going to do something I rarely do for lathe-work ... actually DRAW out a plan.

Planning ahead really takes the spontaneity out !!!!

Lee, to keep it a manageable length you could blend a pendant pen or 1/2 of a teachers pen with a letteropener. Most letter openers have 2-3" tubes but the business end only presses in about 1/2". Lots of spave to play.
