I just received the Fall 2015 edition of Lee Valley's catalog. I see they are now selling Rikon lathes (models 70-100 and 70-220). Previously, we haven't had access to Rikon lathes in Canada.
I have a very cheap variable speed Rikon that I have worn the paint off. It is a truck. If I ever have room for a larger and heavier lathe I'll buy it, but this one works well. It cost $250 and has earned $5,000!
I have had the Rikon 70-100 for over 8 years. It is a great lathe. Strong and steady. I have turned up to a 10" bowl and it never bogs down. They make very good tools. I have their bandsaw and drill press and everything runs well. They also have great customer service for any questions.
Shortly after I bought my first lathe--which I had problems with--I had the opportunity to work on a 70-220 VSR model (I think it this model#) and it was a very stable lathe which the speed control worked flawlessly on. It functioned smoothly and seemed to be a fine quality machine--if I was starting again knowing what I know now, this would be my first lathe!
I have a couple other Rikon tools and am well pleased with them. Good stuff!
