Looking at making a lathe table by using a 24" x 48" butcher block top. For those of you who have made stands/tables for mounting your lathes to, how far from the edge do you bolt it down?

This table top will be used for a number of purposes in pen making and such.......just don't want to make it too heavy on the edge.

Have any ideas/pictures?

TIA,

My home made table/stand is made from 2x4's. I have a Jet 1014 and it is centered on the table (front to back) so the front of the lathe is 5 1/2 inches from the front edge. This allows me to keep a few things very close by such as both my roughing gouge and skew. I can place them on this space and easily change back and forth. It is also handy when finishing so I have a place to put the CA, BLO, paper towel etc and have everything in easy reach.

You're supposed to bolt it down???

I haven't gotten around to bolting it yet. Mine sits on the left end of a rolling workbench, about 2 inches from the edge. Until last night I guess the wood and plastic shavings were holding it in place. For some strange reason I decided to vacuum and clean up alittle.

I've got my mini bolted down to what was once a bookshelf. Top and both sides made of butcher block about 12" wide and is about 48" long. Has two shelves holding some junk. Weighs about 75 pounds empty. And I've got about another 30 pounds or so on shelves. Pretty rigid for small lathe. Lathe is not centered front to back, about an inch from front.
