I'm just starting out turning pens so this is all very new to me - but My Father n law gave me an old craftsman lathe Model # 103.23070 that's missing the motor. (and possibly other stuff not sure till I can really look at it). I was wondering what motor I should put on it and where I would get other tools for it (like centers/chucks or what ever I need for turning)

I've included a picture of the lathe - any suggestions?

Hi sjhuse,

That's a Craftsman / King Seely with a 9" bed, I think. A 1/2 horse motor should do, with a new link belt.

Before you buy a motor, check the bearing in the headstock to make sure it's worth your money.

Headstock threads are 3/4"/16 TPI
Head and tail are MT1

Nova makes a jaw adapter kit you can get at Woodcraft that comes with the 3/4" / 16 insert: Buy NOVA G3 Chuck With 3 4- 16 Insert Kit at Woodcraft

For penturning, I like this mandrel set:

With the mandrel saver on the tail.

Faceplates can still be bought from Sears online, although I wouldn't go crazy with the faceplates, that's just a 9" lathe.
