I have a Jet 1014 lathe and today while turning it started making a high pitched squealing noise. The noise is coming from the top part of the headstock. The noise is also present with the lathe off if I rotate the spindle. Is this a bearing issue? Is this going to be a big deal? I am way behind to make pens for people wanting to give pens as Christmas presents.

Bearings.

At least the most likely cause.

And a big deal if you keep using it without fixing the problem as it will eventually seize and may damage the casting or spindle itself when it does.

The screw that holds the tail spindle was loose. After tightening the noise went away. Sound must have not been coming from where I bought it was. Thanks for the help. If the bearings do go out I'll know what to do.
