I think I need a new lathe soon.. My old 37" one is starting to wear out, Seems to be more OOR issues lately and since the base is round tube, it has some side to side movement which seems to be throwing things off center. If I drill on it, its never dead center or makes a mess. (I pretty much need to manually center the tailstock when I pull it up to the head and tighten it down).

I will keep this one for bigger things, but want a good small one for pens, stoppers, etc..

Heres the problem. I have a lot of MT#1 tools from faceplates, stopper mandrels, pen mandrels, couple of chucks, etc. So I want to be able to use these for the new lathe.

Is there any good lathes out there that has MT#1 & 3/4-16 spindle threads?

I wont be turning anything on it longer then a pen so a desktop would be fine. I dont even care if its VS.

Thanks Jason

Though this may draw criticism from others - check out the Carba-Tec lathes (Penn State sells them). I've seen several on eBay at very good prices.

My Dad gave one to me years ago and I still use it for small turning. It's VS, runs great and I kind of like that little lathe....

#1 MT and 3/4x16 thread - just what you may be looking for.

Many of your problems might be solved simply with taper tools. You can get a double ended taper that allows you to line up headstock and tailstock very quickly and accurately. They come in #1 or #2. I think I saw one at Packard Woodworks.

You can also get a #2 taper lathe and simply use a #2-#1 taper adapter so you can use all your current goodies in the new #2 lathe. My suggestion is the Delta 46-460. I have one and it's the cat's meow! Outstanding product.

I have to agree with Bree (and it's not 'cause I'm afraid of her)
Don't limit yourself to a #1 morse taper.... get an adapter if you must... it will open you up to many more choices.
