I've always been fascinated by the space program. I will never forget driving by the shuttle on its "piggy-back" airplane when I was younger...one of the coolest things I think I have ever seen.
 
It's truly amazing. I've never seen one in person, but sure would like to. I wish we'd build more and take them out further than ever before. I know there's a new kinda like a shuttle but far as I can tell, that's not anything like the shuttle, more of a military defense weapon than anything else..and that's a good idea too, but doesn't at all replace the shuttle. I heard every mission scheduled after the Shuttle that will be launched by the USA is going to be satellites and probes into space only. Probes are cool..but doesn't compare with actual people. Then eventually we might launch people again but in Appolo style crafts only. Of course I'm no space expert, I only know what I hear on the news.
 
I remember going down to Florida when I was 12 and visited the Kennedy Space Center. I remember being in awe from the sheer size of the shuttle only to be dwarfed by the Saturn V rocket and capsule.
 
Jeff, That is awesome! I envy you! As a child, I wanted to be an astronaut or work at NASA rather than be a doctor. At the time, I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to meet some of the original Project Mercury Astronauts as my godparents were close to the Chris Kraft, the flight director at the time. I was in total awe. Growing up, one of the first model rockets I built was the Saturn V used in the Apollo mission. We had one of the Saturn V rockets nearby at NASA that I must have spent hours looking at. Now I tell my children about those days. I was so disappointed when none of the Space Shuttles were coming to rest in Houston. Jeff, thanks so much for showing and helping keep the dream alive.

I got to visit the Florida space center when it was still called Cape Canaveral. I was very young, but the huge rockets on the launch pads were impressive. Those were still the days when the launch pad "fell over" on liftoff.

We've come a long way since those days.
 
I have lived here at the Cape for over 40 years, and have worked on all the manned space flight programs for NASA except Mercury. I hate to see the Space Shuttle Program end ( lots of years in technology development ), especially when all the dedicated engineers and technicans are going to loose their jobs, some with over 20 years experience . Many empty , forclosed houses on the market. The ISS is complete , mostly funded with our money .......so now we pay the Russians millions of dollars to transfer our Astronauts to the station. Endeavor will land here at KSC in the middle of the night , same night as Atlantis is rolled out to the launch pad......should be good for some great photo ops !!!
