Laguna in general is very good equipment. They make a GREAT bandsaw, and a very good tablesaw. I have one of their tablesaws with a sliding table. They are european in design.
So while I can't speak for their lathe, they make a lot of good equipment. You would need to compare very carefully.

I don't have any direct experience with Laguna, nor with Power-Matic... I use a Jet 1442 that I picked up new a few years back... it works for me... but the Laguna looks in the picture and sounds like in their write up that it has many of the same features as the Power-matic... my shop isn't wired for 220, so would not work for me and if I could go back and do it again... I would have bought the Jet 1642.. for the EVS and little extra over the ways... it was also in my price range at the time I bought, but opted for the rotating head stock on the 1442.... the Laguna reads more like the 1642, except for the 220 voltage.

If you have a club nearby, or maybe can find a club member or fellow turner that has one and is willing, you may be able to ask them for a chance to give it a spin..

Glenn:
IIRC, Laguna lathes are actually made by another manufacturer and only distributed by Laguna.

All of the Laguna tools that I have used (bandsaw and table saw) have been excellent. But I did read on a forum recently that they DO NOT make their lathe.

I hope this helps.

Right, and I have a band saw from them, but made by an Italian company. I've had it for about 10 years, and it's great. I had a question about it initially and called them. The president of the company called me back to explain why the rolling base was designed the way it was.

I recently bought a Nova DVR, also 15% off at Woodcraft now. I looked a Laguna, what scared me about them was what I read about service after the sale. Granted people who are unhappy tend to vent, those who are happy tend to be silent. I haven't had much time to really put the DVR though its paces, but so far I've been very happy with the quality and finish with it.
If I remember Laguna has a 1 year warranty compared to a 5/2 year with the Nova.
Just my 2 pence worth

Cheers

When I was looking into a new lathe last year I looked at everything around. The Laguna comes out of the same factory as the Grizzly's. Grizzly is not a manufacturer. So read the grizzly reviews also. I do not want to start a my lathes better than yours debate, But I did not by the grizzly/laguna.

I have understood from another forum that this is the same lathe as the Grizzly. I also understand that Grizzly cs may be better than Laguna. Not necessarily trying to vendor bash, just what I hear. Never bought from Laguna so I'm really not qualified although I have had good results with Grizzly cs. YMMY etc etc.
