I have had my mini lathe for about 5 years and pretty much only do penturning on it, so I'm always between centers and have never noticed any axial play in it since the tailstock prevents that. Recently I was attempting to turn some bottle stoppers and I noticed that as I moved to different sides of the stopper, the headstock would actually shift a slight amount...1/32". I disassembled the headstock and could really find nothing out of place...maybe it always has this axial play, but it just seems odd to me.

With the lathe off I can easily move the head stock back and forth .03". I guess I can always use the tailstock support to turn the bottle stoppers, but thought I could get away without having to.

Any thoughts?????

From side to side? 1/32" in that direction is a ton. Major bearing or shaft issue. In the direction parallel to the bed it wouldn't be crazy. The hand wheel on the head stock is a left hand thread that sets the preload on the bearings. It's not really preload since there are spring washers that the hand wheel sets against. If the motion is parallel to the bed, loosen two set screws on the hand wheel, and snug it up till all motion is eliminated.

It is the spindle that is moving left to right, the housing is firmly bolted down. The bearings are fine, radial runout is spot on. I tried to tighten the handwheel down as much as possible...but noticed it really isn't engaging the spring or (wave washer). I took the washer out and tried to restore the waviness to it and that made a significant difference. Looks like I just need to order a new washer ($3.25) and that might just do the trick.

When you say the spindle is moving left to right, I believe you mean it moves toward and away from the tail stock. If that is the case, the washer you mentioned will likely do the trick. That is better than replacing bearings.
