I just have to share with my peeps here. I am a hoarder of woods and occassionally I look for different vendors that sell woods of all kinds. I would then do a sample buy and go from there after I see quality. Well here is some of my recent findings. I have been buying lumber from Ocooch Hardwoods (https://ocoochhardwoods.com/ )for a long time because they have excellent quality woods and large selections. great for woodworking projects of all kinds such as what I do and that is scrollsawing. Many times it just saves me the hassles of milling to sizes I need. I also buy all my Baltic birch plywood from them and have an order coming tomorrow. Clean woods. The shipping is a bit high but what makes up for it is quality of woods. being I lost my main source which was a local supplier due to a fire in their shop many years ago and they never came back on line. So I know them
Then I was getting a few things at Woodpeckers (https://www.woodpeck.com/ ) and decided to try their lumber. So ordered a couple boards of the same wood that I bought from another vendor which I will tell you about. Well lets say woodpeckers will never be getting any more of my money for lumber. Warped boards, knots and rough sawn edges. Quality was not there.
Which brings me to the reason I wanted to post this in the first place. I buy alot of things on Amazon. say what you want about labor and all that political stuff, I do not want to hear it. They are here to stay. get some real good deals there. I decided to try a company called Barrington hard woods. I started out like all new vendors to me, I placed a small order. About a week later got order and opened and that night I was placing a huge order with them. yes they are a bit pricey but you get what you pay for. Limited with sizes at least through Amazon but quality is A++++++++. Can not say enough good things about this company. The woods are all S4 and dead on to dimensions quoted including the 3/4" size. I placed another order last week and just got it today and again A+++++. I called the company and found out they are not only a walk in store but also have an online source away from Amazon where you can do somewhat better in pricing but you would have to pay shipping so balances out I would guess. I have not tried that way yet but will next time. here is their web site. (https://barringtonhardwoods.com/ ). If you are close to their store in IL you are lucky. So bottom line is this place has top quality woods both domestic and exotics. yes maybe limited but great selections. They do carry turning blocks and pen blanks. You can compare easily but again A++++ quality. If you order on line they have a one time 10% off first time buyers dicount so ask for that. I am not affliliated with them in any way and just reporting my findings and like to share. Happy dust making.
