Has anyone tried to use woodworking joinery techniques in their blank making?
I'm considering what series of dovetails or mortise & tenon joints would look like once turned into a pen.
Any thoughts?

You can only do basic cuts like angles and circles. When you say joinery box joints lock miter joints, tung and groove and things of this nature will not work perse. But can be done with router and different bits to give different effects. Today the big look is the what they call the Gisi look and the triangles people cut. Now they do those plastic print molds . Amazing when something becomes a craze everyone jumps on that broken bandwagon because they have no outside the thinking box power. Use your imagination. Look at standard woodworking designs and try to incorporate in a small canvas. Not easy.

Don't forget about a timber framing scarf joint and it's variations.....locking scarf joint, etc. contrasting color woods will help accentuate the effect.

Good luck!

Slap a few trial blanks together and just turn round to see if the design is close to what you are thinking. In my experience, the initial idea may work, but if it doesn't it will result in 2-3 more promising concepts.

Have FUN!
