Hello, all. I was recently directed towards this site from someone on the WoodCentral forums. I do a lot of woodturning and occasionally make pens. I love browsing through these forums - there is a huge amount of talent and experience here.

Y'all's lucky, you live in the civilized side of the state and not in the swamp lands. Welcome to the forum from Leapwood Tennessee or as the locals spell it "tenuhsea"

Welcome John!

Below are links to two threads/articles that have lots of information on pen turning. The first one is a very basic overview of the many aspects of getting into turning pens.
http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=42446

The second link has postings by different pen turners and what they wish they had known earlier:

Here is another link - a PDF on the acronyms used here. I am sure you know many but this will help with those you don't.

Welcome John. Pens to give a change of scenery for turning. Nice and enjoyable too! There are some differences but not hard to adapt to. Join in the fun and post some picts of your work - pen, bowls or other turnings.

Thanks!

Such a pleasant bunch! I should have mentioned we live fairly near Knoxville, TN. We have a farm just north of Clinton - horses, goats, chickens, and a miniature donkey. I have a sawmill behind the barn and more wood than I can use in a lifetime. In my spare time I like to make music and play with kids (teach a kindergarten sunday school class).

I'll try to take some photos of recent pens soon. After making a bunch for Pens for Troops I decided to make some for friends - some from spalted beech are my favorites.

For anyone interested in other turnings, I put a few photos in a Facebook album which should have public access:
