I saw a demonstration on a Tormek and thought I have to get one of those. I saw this at Rockler during their appreciation day for $299. That is $100 less than a Tormek. I had a Rockler gift card to help on the purchase, so I had to get it. All the Tormek accessories fit the Jet. I sharpened a gouge and a skew. I have got to tell you they are crazy sharp. All I had before was a one speed grinder that was making my tools look odd shaped.

The Tormek tool gauge says to take all skews to 30 degrees. I saw somewhere that someone here said that 30 degrees caused some vibration. What is optimum bevel angle for turning pens?

I have been considering buying a Jet grinder myself, just haven't taken the plunge yet. Keep us posted on how you like it. Not only is it $100 less it appears to have some other advantages like a bigger water tray and adjustable speed. Almost talked the wife into one so I could sharpen knives and her sewing scissors. I probably use the kitchen knives as much or more than she does, but she is the one that gets tired of me complaining about those dull things. Any experience with knives or scissors on that grinder yet?
 
Awaiting the report, and then one more hint to the wife for a upcoming gift. Or maybe I should buy it for her? "Here dear, I bought this just for you to keep those kitchen knives sharp! But I know there is no room in the kitchen so I guess I could store it in the shop, just for you because I love you!" [;)]
 
The Woodcraft that I frequent has both and uses them to demo tool sharpening. We were talking about it on Saturday and they tell me that the Jet wheel seems to wear about twice as fast as the Tormek wheel and they do not see where the speed increase does much. They absolutely LOVE the larger water try and the closed base.

I think it would be hard to beat the Jet but since I bought a Tormek a long time ago
I think I'll stick with it. [:D]

I bought one of these last fall and love it. You can get your gouges and skews really sharp! I have the small knife attachment and my pocket knifes are sharper than they have ever been. I have not done any scissors but I would be surprised if they are not super sharp.
 
I am thinking about buying one but Iam really torn between the Jet and the Tormek ..I want the right one and I know you have to buy jigs like one for the skew one for a fingenail or toenail and I want the wheel dresser .. with a 10% discount that still in the $480.00 range + tax for the Jet ERR Have to buy the Tormek wheel dresser as the patent on it has not run out so Jet don't have one ! OR I can add a $100.00 and just get the Tormek .. What the heck is a TOOL NUT to do :O)

Woodcraft has a 10% off day coming up on Sat. the 14th. In the brochure they advertise that the 2 drawer base and cover are now being thrown in with the sharpener for a price of $269.99. That day only on the $269.99. If I wasn't sending off $2,200 the next day to my least favorite Uncle in Washington, D.C. I would probably get one![xx(]
 
Is that in store the $269.00 with the base and cover ?? If so I will be waiting at the door in the AM when they open ..I see the 10% but nothing about the base and cover for free ?But I am looking at the flyer online not a real flyer .[?]Ok I found my flyer :O)

I got another qustion IF say one r 2 of your tools are ground out of shape :O( will this put them back at the proper angles ..like my one skew my old one is now stright NOT at the proper angle . will it fix it with the proper jig /???
 
Hey Guy, my skew was way off from grinding it on a non variable speed grinder. It took some time but, yeah, it takes it to whatever angle you set it to. I bought the Tormek Tool Setter gauge. I don't remember how much it cost, but it is just a little plastic gauging tool to use when setting shape and edge angles on bowl gouges, spindle gouges and skews. It take the guessing out of setting it up and when it's time to sharpen again, just set the gauge to the settings again and it comes out exactly the same as the last time. I also picked up other Tormek jigs that work with the Jet. It comes with a nice little video to watch. I also went to the Tormek site and downloaded their digital book as the two machines are basically the same. After I sharpen my skew and go back to turning, it is so sharp I can barely feel it working as the ribbons are flying.[:D]
 
Very cool. I need to find a way to sharpen my tools better than what I have. Some day I'll be able to afford something like that. I blew my allowance on my lathe.
 
Pipes, those slow speed grinders with the proper jig will make your like great. I own the Tormek, but would probably buy the Jet if I bought again, because of the price. Like posted above, the jet is on sale for $269 at Woodcraft.

Anyway, with the Tormek, I took a fingernail profile gouge at one point and turned it into a regular gouge, then picked up another jig and just recently turned it into the fingernail profile again. The best thing about the sharpeners is that with the jigs, the whole process of getting exactly the right angle you want takes seconds and it's so easy to sharpen that you can do it in betweem every few pens if you want, or just stop in the middle of one and sharpen.

I would buy either grinder in a heartbeat and would buy the Tormek I have again.
 
Thanks guys I am off this morning to pick up the Jet $269.00 with the FREE stuff the guy I deal with at Woodcraft told me to just come in I didn't have to wait for the sale day :O) . And then I figure I will buy atleast 2 jigs maybe 3 and all the rest sooner or later .I was going to pay EXTRA for the Tormek BUT then I read this see link and what YOU guys said thanks guys :O) .[:D] full report soon .
