My headstock in making a knocking sound at low speeds. Is this something common, before I go and try to list every little detail of it's occurrence?

Mine wasn't a jet, however, the knocking/clicking noise was the outter layer of a belt which was pulled away from the fabric and whenever it rolled over the pulley and hit something it made the sound. new belt...noise gone...

Naw, mine isn't an electric VS so I've got to manhandle the belt a few times for everything I turn. It's not a frayed belt. Good idea though.

Bearings failing can make a clicking noise --- Vibration??? If not, order a spare set of bearings and keep turning until the noise (or smoke) tells that tis time to change.

Check to see if the upper pulley has come loose. I have a jet mini and no matter how much I tighten the set screw it eventually works loose and the pulley slips up against the frame and makes that sound.

Skye,
Agree with Dale... check your pulley set screws first... if I remember correctly, yours is relatively new Jet... too early for bearings... also take a look at your hand wheel.. it will sometimes come loose and make a clicking noise.

My Jet mini (4 months old) was making a clicking noise last week and I also thought it was coming from the headstock but after doing a little dis-assembly and looking.. The cooling fan under the metal cover on the motor was loosy goosy causing the noise.. (set screw backed off)... tightened her up, noise gone...

Something to look at...

My non-VS Jet mini thumps if I don't tighten the belt enough. A firm press-down on the motor lever before tightening the nut seems to help. It's done this from day 1.
