I'm wondering if anyone has modified the tail stock wheel by making it larger? When I drill it takes a lot of turns to move the bit. I have a bad shoulder and would like to enlarge the wheel to make fewer revolutions per drill movement.

I have a Jet mini and have arthritis so I turn seated. I'd like to drill on the lathe but I may have to move to the drill press but I have to stand to do that right now.

Trying to make modifications as needed as the old body slows down.

Unfortunately modifying the wheel won't help you there. The number of revolutions is determined by the pitch of the threads on the quill. If it is an 8 tpi then it will take 8 turns to go an inch. A larger wheel will only give you more leverage but with that you would increase the rotational travel. Number of revolutions wouldn't change.

Depending on your lathes location and setup, could you move to the backside and use the other arm?

I always wondered if someone found a way to turn that with a drill (motor). It helps to put pressure on the ram as it goes back in.
