My Jet 1642 lathe maxes out at 2465 RPM. It used to run at the rated high of 3200 but lately high speed is varying between 2415 and 2465.
I checked the belt tension and it is as tight as I can get it.
It is it time for a new belt or is there some other possible problem?

Got the same lathe - 1 1/2 hp evs. Suggest you check the inverter on the rear if you have that model. Also check that the belt is on the right pulleys (duh -DAMHIKT). Other than a bum motor (ugh) it might be low voltage. Needs a short heavy ext cord (12 gauge) if you use one.

No changes in hookup or belt pulleys.
Not sure what to do about the inverter (it has one).
Maybe low voltage from all the cold weather down here in Georgia although the shop is a cozy 68º.

Larry - I played with mine for a bit yesterday. It worked normally. Maxed out at 3200. The post on the inverter was set at about halfway. Maybe you could contact Jet?

I adjusted the control on the inverter and it had no effect on the speed.

I loosened the tension on the belt - just the weight of the motor - no effect.

It's a strange reading. The RPM reads 2416, 2464, 2465 and then repeats 2416, 2464, 2465.

No other suggestions I'll contact Jet.

Did you reboot? Completely unplug from power. Worth a try.
A turning friend of mine told me last week about his Grizzly . He added a brake feature and to get it to work, he had a friend hook up a laptop to the power unit and unlock some functions. And then also adjust the parameters on a couple of other things like length of time for ramp up to set speed.

Been there. Done that.

If remember someone here was complaining about RPM's on his Jet 1642 not being right, & technician advised him to adjust the speed control nob. No information on how to do that.

My Jet 1642 stopped working one day, pushed the reset button, unplugged/plugged back in, still did not work, so removed speed control nob cleaned it. Looked to see if there was a way to make any adjustments but did not see any. So after putting everything back together, plugged in and lathe worked. Guess spent ½ hour messing around, and have no problems since.

Not sure allen wrenches to remove SCN & compressed air fixed my lathe or just unplugged for 1/2 hour did the trick.

Lots of mumbling & rumbling from me do think it might just be your speed control nob out of adjustment?

I'd call Jet and get it working...could be a board, controller, inverter...who knows.
These are almost as complex as cars these days so let the builders do their thing. Mine just had it's 3rd birthday in December and I wouldn't trade that sucka for nuthin'...except language lessons?

I contacted Jet and the tech I talked to said that I may have overheated the motor by running it below 1000 rpm with the belt in the high speed position. I never ran it below the 120 rpm that it states on the name plate for the belt speeds. He advised me to run it with the belt in the low speed position to see how that works. It worked fine in the low speed position. He also stated that the variation in the speed as indicated by the rpm display was probably due to a dirty speed control potentiometer. If that were the case it would have shown up when the belt was in the low speed position.
After changing the belt position and trying different things that he had recommended I called him back but I got his voice mail and he hasn't yet responded.
Overall I was underwhelmed by his comments and suggestions.
I have come to believe that the whole problem may be that the rpm indicator is not functioning properly at the high speed but I don't have an external tachometer to check it.

Ahhhh...Larry, I seem to remember some posts on other forums about the speed controller on the Jet getting dirty. $5 can of contact cleaner may be a good fix and a warning to the rest of us with the 1642

Again, I don't think that's the problem because as I said above it works fine with the belt in the low speed position. "Think" is the operative word here.

I wouldn't trade my 1642 for anything else either.

I .com coming up on a year on mine. I have the 2 HP version. Sometimes mine doesn't start till I play with the on / off switch.

Just posing so I can hopefully hear what the fix is.

The idea of cleaning out the inverted sounds like a good idea anyway.
