Jet 1442 VS Problem

I just upgraded to a Jet 1442. I really love the lathe minus one issue. When I turn the lathe on higher speeds for shaping or finishing, the lever that controls the speed is a little in the way. I can work around it, but I would rather have either a smaller control arm or be able to "flip" the control arm in the opposite direction. Anyone know if you can do this?

Can you shorten up the handle by an inch or two? You will lose a bit of leverage, but I'm not sure that you need all that much.
