I have a Jet 1236 that is less than 2 years old which I bought used. The lathe has lost speed rather dramatically. The Reeves drive seems to work properly, but it is very slow, even at top speed selection.

My manual is of precious little help. Can anyone give me some tips?

TIA,

Cav,

As Ron said, check if both the pulley changes diameter when you switch the dial. They should open/close alternately depending on you speed/slow it up/down.

Careful running the lathe w/o the cover. Make sure you don't have any clothing/jewelry that will get snagged. (I didn't mean you do it naked :D;)[}:)] LOL).

Ron and Dario, you hit the proverbial nail on the head. The pully next to the motor changes diameter, but the other one does not. The shifting lever bracket moves away from the pulley and seems loose, but I do not see how to tighten it.

You probably just need to clean and lubricate the one that is stuck. I seem to have read that you should use graphite powder (not oil).

It's been awhile, so I might be a little fuzzy on this. But there is a nut that is under the part that connects to the bar that is attached to the lever (does that make sense?). It's hard to see. You'll need to adjust how far the pulley opens and close.

BTW - I used to spray Brake Cleaner to clean the parts before lubricating the moving parts.

Cav, most lathes using the reeves drives are pretty much alike, I have a Delta 46-715 (bought used) and had a problem similar to yours, a belt replacement solved it but I noticed the old belt was wearing badly on one side. I found this was caused by the pulley on the motor not opening and closing as it should because it was dirty and seizing up.This pulley is two pieced, spring loaded and held together by a retaining ring, This can easilly be ck'd by simply spreading the two ears of the pulley with a large screwdiver while you have the belt off. I washed it out with alcohol dried it off and lubed it with powdered graphite and have not had a problem since.Feel free to PM me if I can be of help.

Thanks to all. I sprayed the rod that the upper pulley is on with a break free product and lightly tapped that side of the pulley with a rubber mallet. It is moving and we are back to rolling faster. I'll get some graphite tomorrow and give the moving parts a good dose of dry lubrication.
