I purchased a used 1236 Jet a year and a half ago. It is blue so I assume that it was made before 2001. No manual came with it. I am trying to change the revolving center in the tailstock, but I can't figure out how to do it. I've cranked in all the way in, but that does not work.:(

Anyone out there with an older Jet than can answer my question? I'd really like to replace that center.

It should pop out when you crank it all the way back. It will reach a stopping point but give it a little more twist...it should work if you are using the stock live center.

That is what I tried, just like on my mini, but nothing. I'd crank harder, but I don't want to strip anything.

<br />Is there a hole in the back of the tailstock so you can poke it out?

I will try that tonight, but I think that I've tried that before and is only popped out the little center post. While replacing that would help my cause, I'd really like to use my cone revolving center or my Jacob's chuck.

I'll try when I get home. I'll let you know if my memory is still there or if my obsession with turning has caused me to go completely insane.[:p] I'm sure I'll get a few comments about this.

It should have come with a knock out rod that slides through the back of the tailstock to knock out the live center. It it only knocks out the spur portion of the center, then use a larger rod that will fit in the hole. My stock Jet center will not come out with full retraction, but my better one (I think oneway) does.

I have that lathe and it just needs to be cranked back until it pops out. Try putting some pressure on it by cranking it back and give the live center a rap with a brass hammer (or a block of wood and a reg hammer. This well sometimes cause the taper shaft to spring free. Squirt a little WD around the front. Also have a look at the back of the tail stock and make sure someone hasn't install a shaft running from the back of the tail stock to the live center. Sometimes there is a threaded shaft that going in hole in the tailstack and screws into the back of the revolving center. If this is the case you just need to unscrew it.
