Does anyone have any thoughts on modifying a jet mini stand to hold a jet 1220? I currently have a VS jet mini that has had alignment issues from day 1 (2 replacement tailstocks from jet failed to solve the issue). I've lived with it for a few years and have occasionally had a pen turn out ok. I bought a new drill chuck and carbide tipped dead center and figured I should have a new lathe to go with them. I don't use the VS a whole lot (either slow to drill & for bowls, or fast for pens) so figured for about the same price as a new VS I'd upgrade is size & power a bit. I don't want to buy a new stand since I also bought a Drill Doctor and jet wet sharpener.
(Here comes the actual question)
One of the guys at the "local" Woodcraft (a professional turner, or so I'm told) said a piece of 3/4" plywood bolted to the top of the 1014 stand would be plenty sturdy for the 1220. My thought was I should glue together at least 2 pieces of 3/4".
Any thoughts (better, same, worse...)?
Thanks a bunch.
