Hello Guys,

I have a Jet mini, the tailstock quill is starting to turn hard. Does anyone have know how to take it apart and put it back together? I want to clean it all up, a little lube and get back to turning. If there is a write up on the subject let me know where it is.

Thanks

Hello Guys,

Robert; It is fairly easy to remove the tailstock (TS) quill. There are not a lot of pieces involved.

  1. Extend the TS quill until it stops.
  2. Remove the quill lock lever at the rear of the tailstock.
  3. There is set screw on the side of the TS hand-crank. Loosen the set screw about 5 turns. It is a 3mm metric hex wrench on my Jet 1014. Pull the hand-crank straight off the rear of the shaft.
  4. Use a soft faced hammer and/or wood dowel to gently tap the shaft and quill toward the head-stock. Don't let the quill fall.
  5. Unscrew the quill and shaft screw. Clean with mineral spirits, or denatured alcohol. Spray with WD40 or wipe with an oily rag to keep rust at bay. Don't forget the inside of the tail-stock. Lube with white lithium or graphite.
  6. To re-assemble, just reverse the steps. The notch in the TS quill goes at the rear of the tail stock and the TS lock lever goes into this slot. There is a "dimple" on the TS shaft. The set screw is inserted into this dimple. If the quill and hand-crank is too loose, or too tight, readjust the set screw.
