My wife and I are investigating the tools required to turn drop spindles. Drop spindles are an ancient tool used to spin fiber into yarn.

In the simplest form, they are a shaft and a whorl AKA flywheel.

The shafts of course can have beads and so forth. And the whorls are sometimes flat disks and other times 'bowled' to reduce their overall weight while maintaining weight at the rim. Nice drop spindles are made of exotic woods. My wife has several drop spindles made from ebony, rosewood, zebrawood, and various burls.

While I realize that this is a 'pen' site, pens and drop spindles are about the same size. I'm trying to determine the appropriate lathe and tooling for making these. Any advice would be appreciated.
