:wink:I had to make a pen from a very punky piece of spalted tamarind so I tried a new gouge. It worked great and took the wood right down close to the bushing with zero chip out. Very easy to resharpen also, just slap a new pad on! Has anyone else given this a try?

IMHO It's not cheating and a proper use of tools if the following apply.

You achieved the desired result without hurting yourself or someone else and you did not damage any tools.

NOTE: Desired result implies that that the end product was not damaged.
 
This is how I turn cross cut blanks .Works very well.And I really like the grainning like this.Tryed it this summer. Finally justified that tool I bought last year.Have "fun".
