Since I've been on IAP I've expotentially increased my knowledge of the world of pens. Not only the how-to, but the many products for building, tooling, and so on. My world of what I once knew as quality has been destroyed!

I walked into Rockler (the once upon a time wood working kingdom of quality and knowledge) this morning to buy a dead center, a few spare transmissions, and find inspiration for making some blanks.

I was informed that they don't carry the first two items on my list, and why would I buy a kit without the corisponding bushings? Not to mention that dead centers aren't made to turn a mandrel anyhow :bulgy-eyes:TBC was completely foreign to the staff.

It looks like my knowledge will now only come from between the various subforums of IAP and its library, and my hard earned cash will have to go to the various vendors and USPS.

Thanks IAP for showing me that everything I ever thought I knew about pen turning was superficial

I'm with you Redneck. Just in the last month my knowledge and techniques have skyrocketed. As far as the local retailers go I guess it's up to us to know what we want and up to them to let us know if they carry it or can get it. In their defence I realize they maybe into other woodworking things as cabinets, carving or many others and not so much into just pens but thats what makes us special. Thanks to all who post their sucesses and failures so we all can lean from both. Now I have to ask the question I thought redneck was a southern thing so why in In. I'm sure there might be a twist with the Medic part. Thanks again Kenny

A couple of months ago, in a conversation with our local Woodcraft pen turning "expert", I told him I didn't use a mandrel when turning pens. He was dumbfounded. Didn't have a clue. They have since gone out of business.

Isn't funny how pushing the boundries here and there elevates your knowledge base and comfort level? Pat on the back to ya!

I have to chime in here! I, too, find that IAP is the only resource for truly knowledgeable info. I have, also, discovered that the best, quality products come from the IAP vendors.

Matthew, John Goodin (johnnycnc) has the dead centers, and a WHOLE bunch of other stuff. He lives in Columbus, and as far as I know, still works on Shadeland Ave. in Indy. A really great guy, and will do what he can to help you out. Check him out at Penturners Products! He even makes pens, when he has time.:biggrin:

While IAP is my primary source for information and advice, there ARE other good sources for penturners. An excellent source is Yahoo's Penturners Group moderated by Rich Kleinhenz, Don Ward (its_virgil), Kurt Hertzog, Pat Lawson (penladypat) and others. Many of the members here are also members there. Lot's of good discussion and advice. Also, they have a very comprehensive FAQ which would be good for newbies and journemen turners alike.
