As many of you know i've been working on building one of the mdf rose engine lathes. I've been emailing back and forth w/ guru dave lindow talking about ordering a cutting frame and all. He said w/ his experience, that he's been the youngest oter that he's seen. He's 37 and i'm 15 so i may possibly be the youngest ornamental turner (as soon as i get that lathe built!)

hehe...you mean aside from the 300 eight year olds working at the spindle sweat shop in Malaysia? :D

I can't wait to see that thing when you're done. How much money do you think you'll have in it when all's said and done?

mdf-$40
cross slide machinists vise(i'll upgrade to an actual compound when i have more money)-40
machining-$20(it's nice to have an uncle to do this stuff)
cutting frame-$350
satisfaction of building this- priceless
so i'd say about $500 after tax and some stuff was rounded down, misc. fasteners and such, you get the idear.

I admire your perseverance in building the rose lathe. Keep it up and you'll go a long way in life. Too many young people your age shy away from such challenges. ;););)

I hope you are taking pictures of the build as you go along. They would be great to look back at later and could be priceless if you have a problem or need to remake a part. I wouldn't mind seeing a picture of the finished product, this sounds like a big build. Good luck

I went snooping around the net looking at these monsters, and I still haven't got my head wrapped around how they work. Rubbing and bumping and twirling...who is the nutcase that came up with these things?!

I found a couple of designs similar to Andrew's, man, that's a lot of weirdness and work! I also saw some awesome pieces done on there, too.

I may have to look into building one. I imagine that's a bit cheaper than buying one, and if I build it, I'll know exactly what to replace when something goes kablooie.

I couldn't believe the first RC car I bought. Opened the box, and instead of the cool car on the box picture, there was just a crapload of bags full of nuts and bolts and plastic pieces. I was kinda mad until I finished it. Then, whenever a part flew off, or was forced into flight due to operator error, I knew just what to fix.

Hey, maybe I'll build a radio controlled skew! heh [:p]

Thanks for the encouragement guys. The build is not as bad as it seems (someone else is doing the machining for me)The rest is just ripping mdf on a tablesaw (well that's my dad's job) and joining the pieces together with biscuits. Everyone looks at this project at first and it all seems like a bunch of garbled words but if you break it down it's actually pretty easy.;)
