So the family and I are on Vacation for 3 weeks, Drove to Florida, plans are for 2 days at LegoLand, 2 Days at Universal, then 9 days at Disney. We're going to stay on Disney at one of their resorts, but got a hotel outside of D for the other 4 days. Pulled in the first night, unloaded the car and went to sleep (23 hours of driving and sleeping in passenger seat, bed called LOUDLY...). Woke up in the morning, went out and opened the car and it REEEKED of smoke (neither of us do..) Looked around, ashes on seats, drivers seat in funny position... Someone was in our car overnight. Then panic struck and I could not remember what we had left in the car. Quick inventory showed the change bucket (what they consider the ash tray) had been emptied of what was probably $1.65) a multi-tool, and our GPS, which I'm in the habit of storing in the center console out of lazyness, were all that were missing. GPS was a super cheap model bought over 4 years ago, so I'm considering this a good excuse to buy another one, but the most insulting thing is he left my favorite personal spalted hackberry Jr Gent sitting right next to the GPS... I'm grateful not to have lost one of the first pens I made that I think came out perfect, but I'm also a little insulted he didn't think he could get more for it than he could have for our GPS, which is probably $10 or $20 at the local pawn shop...

Oh well, A cheap lesson, double check that the car is locked... I was pretty sure I locked it, but they got in without breaking anything, so I must not have...

Ouch, Well if it makes you feel any better about 50% of all car thefts happen due to locked doors. Often times the person who breaks in watches you leave the car and notes that it is unlocked and location of items. i.e. woman puts her handbag in the trunk and forgets to lock the doors. theft opens the door unlocks truck and grabs bag.

As for the pen goes, well all I have to say is the proverbial rattlesnake.

FYI when/if you talk to the insurance company don't mention the doors was unlocked.

Florida has a high level of homeless mainly because of the climate. It is something that you generally do not see as much of in the northern states unless you are in the bigger cities. Sorry for the lesson learned the hard way. Stay safe and most important enjoy your vacation as well as the kids. Those years do not last very long.

I know the feeling of having someone in your vehicle or house and going through your stuff... I've had one car stolen and my house has been burglarized three times... thank goodness for insurance... the car was replaced with another very similar but not exactly same... the first time the house was burglarized, my insurance company depreciated what I lost and I only collected about 50% of the value... I changed to replacement value insurance after that... since I lived in Los Angeles and San Francisco for a number of years, I got into the habit of locking my car every time I get out... I've even locked a convertible with the top down... really secure that way right??

Had my car broken in to about 2 feet from my house while I was asleep one night. Busted my door because it was lockec, they got my CD player, amp, 12's, 150+CDs and my MagLite. And the neighbors all heard something outside but didn't want to look. Still a little ticked about it years later.

It's an awful feeling deep in your gut when you get ripped off like that! You can be thankful at least it wasn't worse.
Hope you enjoy the rest of your vacation!

Todd,
In the city where I am a policeman, we have had trouble with that type of activity. The kids call it "change surfing". Usually it takes place in a nicer neighborhood, but we have had it in parking lots too. I am told it takes place between 2:30 and 4:30 am, they go from car to car and if the door is open, they take change, CD's, sunglasses, ipod's, anything in the car. If the car is locked they move on. We recently caught some kids on bicycles each with a full backpacks. They had in excess of 300.00 in addition to many trinkets. A lot of times if you look in a dark corner where there are bushes you will find the things they do not want.

There are several things about it that are troubling to us....it is easy for these kids, and it is profitable for them. Seldom are reports made by the victims as it is seen as more trouble than it's worth. As a result, we have ended up with an evidence room full of small things that we have no reports for.....and no...no one can buy them.

Hmmmm....a strong garage door and a mean dog seem to discourage them.

Seriously we have had similar kinds of outbreaks here also, in our small development of 125 homes 5 or 6 cars were broken into one night. Most of them were not locked and were parked in the driveway. Ours are in the garage and we've not had any problems.

Sorry to hear of,your troubles, but at least you can laugh about it.

As I read your story I must confess the first thing that came to mind was the scene with "mike and the boys" from the "The Other Guys"
