I was working on the Jr. Gent blanks I posted yesterday. I had the cap piece almost finished and getting ready to sand it, when I noticed it didn't look even on the ends. I took the bushings off of it and seen the tube didn't look centered anymore. I checked the bushings and they are a little loose inside the tubes. I thought they were the correct bushings and if they aren't, I can't find any others that fit.
Now I have to start all over and I put four days into preparing these dang things.:frown: And I guess I have to get some bushings some place.

Can you put the tubes between centers with no bushings? If so, make them concentric again an if needed build up with CA.

I don't have the stuff for between centers. The one side is almost down to the tube and I'm pretty sure that it's way too small around to fix it.

I will just start over and find some bushings that fit hopefully. I know now to check the bushings... I learned something new today.

Are you sure it is not the hole being too large?

Sounds like your tube is off to one side---but you're looking at it, I'm just reading about it---

FWIW,
Ed

Ed,

I'm pretty sure the hole is correct. I used the same drill bits that I used on the other pens I made and the tubes were pretty snug with the epoxy on them.

Plus the bushings move side to side inside the tubes. Wouldn't that cause it to be to one side?

Of coarse, there is the possibility that it was just me that screwed up.
But, you didn't hear me say that...

Absolutely, that is NOT supposed to happen!!

Do you have a 60 degree live center? How about a chuck of any sort for the headstock?

If so, you can be between centers well enough to fix this

Hark!

There is help. See my postings here on how to do that. The Dragon Sceptre; Gent tube conversion. It is very doable to use undersized damaged tubes and build them up, greatly to I might add.

Ed,

I don't think I could do that. It seems a little over my skill level and I still need to get the correct bushings.
I did see the mention in your right up about recasting and that might be an option.

I will make a new set for this pen since it's going to a person in Las Vegas. I want it to be as perfect as I can get it.

You have much more confidence about my ability than I do.

I wonder if there's any variance in the tubes for jr gent type suppliers. My stock bushing has much more play than it should but was fine once I locked it down between centers.

I use tbc bushings from the baron set for the jr cap and one tbc bushing and one stock bushing for the pen tube.
