Our Library Manager Tom Woolley ([profile]TomW[/profile]) and I have been hatching an idea for a while and we decided to gauge the interest before we get rolling.

The simple explanation is this: The IAP buys several video cameras and sends them to people interested in sharing tips, techniques, and shop tours. After a couple of weeks, the user sends the camera back, we download and edit the video into topical segments, and post them on our YouTube channel. Then we send the camera to the next person in line.

The idea is to build a library of the various ways to do things that people often ask about, like how to apply a CA finish, use different tools, turn unusual features, cast, disassemble pens, make kitless pens -- pretty much anything and everything related to penmaking. Sure, there are commercial DVDs out there, but YOURS isn't, and we'd like to see how you work!

It will also be great to see your shops, tools, fixtures, and anything else that you'd like to share or teach us. It would even be fun to see your spouse or kids interview you about how you got started in penmaking and what it means to you today.

Get the idea?

So, please vote in the poll and leave a comment!

THANKS!

Where's the "I'd love to help, but theres not enough hours in the day" button??

:biggrin::biggrin:

One other thought.... If the camera is going to be near a local meeting, could pass it to a next guy at a meeting AND film at the meeting too.... Less shipping, more videos?

EXCELLENT IDEA! It would be nice to see some demos from meetings as well.

I can't claim credit... The Wisconsin chapter has started doing this... I'll see if I can get my hands on the videos.

WOW, do you know SOMEONE who GOES to those meetings???:biggrin::biggrin:

Hey jeff if you need some help in the editing I have a small experience in this. Already have a couple a programs to do this. Just let me know if I can help.

You know, with the plethora of iPhones out there, shooting video shouldn't be difficult at all!

I've an idea for you. Ask members to send you a video link they uploaded to youtube about something or another and let everyone vote for their favorite one and give the winner a prize. That sounds like fun!

I have a camere and will be more than willing to share so,e techniques. I also marked that i will help edit, I have some practice with basic editing software, however, it may take me a whie tomget a videomready with school and everything else.

Sounds like a good idea. I don't have anything to teach or pass on but I would like to see what others do.

Who said it was a dumb Idea? phooey on em!

Best video is definitely on my list for 2013 Birthday BASH!

I voted #2 and was going to vote #5 as well, but resisted:biggrin:

Nice idea, but I think there are enogh folks with their own cameras. People that already have cameras usually have experience using them so no one would have to go through the steep learning curve of getting to grips using a strange camera to produce something worth watching for the relitively short period they would have it.

Also....( someone has to say it, so I will ) unfortunately I think one or two cameras might just get 'lost in the post':frown:

I have a couple vids on You tube, but the sound is poor. But IAP is welcome to them anyway.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

Anyone with videos to share now can contact [profile]TomW[/profile]

We can put them on our YouTube channel or we can link to yours.

Look for more info from us soon...

I'd consider doing a video, but shipping a camera back and forth to Canada would be a non-starter. I could buy a camera for less than the shipping, brokerage, and insurance, and simply send you the videos.

That's easy then!! The logical answer would be a dedicated Canada camera if there is enough members to justify that ( I think there could be). Andrew is in Canada and I'm sure could work with Jeff to start the ball.

I think it's a wonderful idea but I also agree with Skippy that you're taking a big chance in sending a camera all around.

I have a camera and I would be happy to bring it to a local chapter meeting and we could shoot video's there.

I like the idea. As far as shipping cameras, I'm thinking as long as the user of the camera knows how to copy the files off of it first before shipping and get's insurance on it, then the impact of a lost camera wouldn't be that bad...

I was under the impression that it is pretty expensive for folks in Canada to send stuff to each other - wouldn't that apply to things like expensive video equipment as well?

Our Chapter meeting is January 28th - generally we have a REALLY big meeting (upwards of 50 people I think at one of them??) At any rate since we are supposed to have a segmenting demo it might be pretty nice to video that - if any of you Indy folks have the means to do this ..... I'm just saying!:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:
