I found out in September that the state of Arizona did not think I was qualified to teach a reading intervention class. I was qualified the last two years I taught this class. According to the state my Masters Degree in Reading Education was not good enough anymore. I had to either pay for and jump through 5 more graduate level hoops by May, or take a qualifying test. I took the test in November in hopes of avoiding the "required" courses and couple thousand dollar expense. I don't like tests and have never been successful with time limited tests, so I have been pretty worried. Of course they make you wait a whole month before telling you how you did.

Got the results this morning and I PASSED. This is a HUGE load off my shoulders.

I thought it was more than silly that my Masters was not enough but the state department of education is about as linear a bunch of thinkers as I have ever dealt with. All five of the classes I needed to take I did take but under a different title. Since the title was different it did not count.

I passed, and that is all that matters.

Congratulations!!
I can sympathise with you about your qualifications not being deemed enough. My wife is an English speaking High School teacher and when we moved back to UK from South Africa in '97, she had to do a test to show she could read and write English. If you ever meet a SA woman, you will know that is a mistake!!
English is her first language and she has Degrees in teaching it. She's fluent in Afrikaans, Zulu and can get by in Xhosa too.
Once she did the stupid test, she sent back all the correspondence from them and highlighted all the spelling and gramatical errors in their letters!!

A few years ago, she applied for her UK citizenship and later asked them if they could issue her a new cert without the spelling mistakes!! They did!!:biggrin:

Congratulations, Mark, Its ready stupid if you ask me you already have a masters. I just wonder if the people could require the people who run for office to take a test before they run for office. My son who has 2 BA 2 Masters 2 PHD's and has taught at UPenn, Rugters SAn Francisco UNiversity ~ yet he can not teach in secondary schools in CAlifornia b/c the state feels he does not have the qualifications. Go figure?

Congrats! :highfive: I often think the only reason for getting people to "re-qualify" is to screw fees out of them.
I get sooooo fed up hearing about "skills" shortages, & shortages of certain professionals up here, what they actually mean is, "you may have been doing the job for 20 years but you don't have OUR piece of paper"
Good on you! glad it worked out for you.
Skippy... Kudos to your good lady, looks like that b/s is not only here in Canada.

I live in Michigan hold a bachelors degree with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Chemistry as well as a Masters in Educational Administration. I taught math and chemisty at the secondary level for 37 years. I was then told I would need to go back to school for a chem major or take a test to get certified to teach chem under the new "standards".

After 37 years I decided I had enough and am in my 8th year being retired. Best decision I ever made.
