I currently have a 1/2" MT2 chuck, but it only goes up to 1/2". This means I can't use it for larger pens like the Emperor, etc. if I want to drill using the lathe. Anyone got a good source (read cheap)?

I saw that $9.95 HF chuck you were using at MPG, you can't drill deep because it ejects before retracting all the way. I have one just like it and it absolutely maxes out at half an inch. I'll be watching close to see if somebody knows of another cheap chuck that will hold the big bit for an El Grande. BTW, thanks for the demo.

Ever considered using another drill bit instead (w/ smaller shank)?

Not with the price I paid for my larger bits.;)

Here's a link to a 3/4" chuck in the Enco catalog. $35 for the chuck and you'll need to buy the MT2 adapter for $5. The larger chucks usally have 3JT or 4JT mounts so you'll need to pay $5 for a 3JT to MT2 adapter. Scroll down for the adapter. $40 is a good price for a 3/4" chuck IMO.

Perfect! Just what I was looking for. I've purchased from Enco a few times, but I didn't think to check there. DOH! Brain must be slippin'. Frank, I looked at the other as well, but Enco has a better deal.

I did some checking tonight and discovered something odd. Four years ago I ordered a 1/2" drill chuck and MT2 shaft from PSI. I used it w/o question for about a year before I started making larger pens and everything I chucked up worked fine. When I moved up to a Gent the chuck wouldn't take the bits. I have no shank larger than 1/2" so I was quite surprised. But w/in months I got my PHD vise and forgot about the issue. But I've been doing some blanks lately that really would be best drilled on the lathe so I gave it a try only to be reminded of the ill fitting chuck. Upon examination tonight I discovered that my "half inch" chuck is actually 10mm!!!!!!!![V] No wonder it wouldn't take 1/2" shanked bits. Too late to have them send me another, but it's still agrevating.

Now for the good news. This afternoon before discovering all the details, I ordered the chuck from Enco and it should be here in a few days. Life will be good then.:D

John, I think it was about $7. I made sure I exceeded the $50 on my last order so I could take advantage of the free shipping. I just couldn't think of anything else I really needed to bump it up this time.
