I spent part of my lunch talking to the nearest well stocked lumber place to me. I was pricing lumber for a rocking chair. They have what they call hard country maple and I like the look of it and the price is great, but they only list 4/4 and I wanted to know if they could get 8/4 and 10/4. I asked what I thought was a simple enough question

"Can you get 8/4 and 10/4 in country hard maple, from your supplier?"

I was told they only had those sizes in hard maple so I would have to buy hard maple.

I responded that I knew they did not have it in stock but was wondering if they could GET it.

At this point the guy decided I was stupid so repeated that they did not have it in stock and I would have to substitute another wood.

Buying lumber over the phone is kind of difficult.

I said "can you order that size?"

To which he responded "we don't have it in stock right now."

I thanked him for his time and hung up.

Now here is the question, was I not speaking clearly?

This was not a box store. They know what they are doing which is why I asked if you folks thought my question was unclear. When I have visited the store and spoke with them I always leave with less money but more respect for their knowledge. Maybe everyone else was busy and the freshly hired plane operator was told to answer the phone.
 
That sort of thing happens to me all the time.

Lots companies here in Australia just employ people who have no idea about what they are selling. They also give them no training, sometimes not even on how to process a sale.

Others just don't care. Anything beyond the norm is "too hard" so the response is "that's all we've got".

Ring up and ask for the manager, see if they care that they lost a sale and future ones. If they don't, I'd look for a new supplier.

Stuff Happens

It seems clear enough to me -- but, we (the USA) are (too fast in my opinion) getting to be a society where the "if it ain't on the shelf, we don't have it" attitude is the norm.

At the nearest Walmart, I have had the store tell me they couldn't get an item that I could order on line and have delivered free to store for me to pick up.
 
The family owned lumber yard I use has many knowledgeable employees and several who THINK they are! I have learned over years of dealing with them who to talk to for what.... Some are knowledgable in electrical, others in plumbing etc. I have also learned the eager ones often are to be avoided. I remember one greeting me as I came in the door with "can I help you" .... When I told him what I wanted and he led me to the plumbing section (I was after a Vix bit) ... I politely told him that I guess he couldn't help me. Then I took him to where they were and explained what they were used for.
It's all in talking to the right person! Some want to help .... Some just put their time in!
 
Sounds a bit like the big chested lady of very light hair going into the library and asking for "a minimum serve of chips", she was told this is a library so she whispers "can I have a minimum serve of chips please????":confused:
 
Someone, somewhere will have what you want. Call your closest Woodcraft store. If they don't they will know where. The store here in Boise Idaho is super good at helping folks. I have a maple that is close to making a climate change and becoming a indoor community, about three years. If you are not in a big hurry, maybe something will show up in your area.
The next time you call someone and they don't seem to understand is they really don't understand so call the next in line.
