You never know what you might find at an auction.I went to one today because it had a planer in the listing.Turns out I couldn't use it because it was 230v so I couldn't plug it in.That's not what this thread is about. It is what else I found, and that is burl.I pick up this box of small burls and a couple of small slabs for $2.That's not much to justify the thread title, but the big piece is.It is redwood burl slab,It is so beautifull,I can only describe it as Africa is burning,Got it for $40.Almost peed my pants in excitement, then again maybe it was because I was holding it for an hour cause I was afarid they'd sell it while I was in the restroom.I think it would make a great clock but my wife says our wall isn't big enough. What do you think?

Yeah sure, I'll get right on that Smitty.

I don't remember seeing any flat rate boxes big enough to ship so I'll just have to keep it Bob, BSEA

I hate to be the Dennis Downer here but I hope that burl wasn't of those that was hacked off illegally.

I have no idea, the prevoius owner passed away so I couldn't ask.As far as that goes how can you be 100%sure any wood you buy wasn't harvested illegally.Unless you get it yourself from your land or with the landowners permission.

Personally, I would be planning out the bowls (starting with the biggest) I could get from it. Then what is left over would be pen blanks. That would make some seriously fine bowls. On another note, If you run into trouble getting the bowl idea down, Just send it to me and I will take care of that for you. Seriously though. Congratulations on a great find. I'm sure you will have a great time making whatever projects come to mind.

At only 2.5" thick they would be some pretty shallow bowls.Planning on taking it down to the local custom kitchen shop to have it surface sanded. From there who knows. No quick decisions I'll probably never have a piece like this again.

Thanks Larry, you have some beautifull pieces on your website

Here are three articles of Red Wood Burl Thefts.
Story one with Video.

Here's one from CNN-No Video.

And the last story. at least the last one I found without too much repeating info of the others

I am not being critical, and if it perhaps is older than 10 years then most likely it is a safe bet that was from responsible forestry.

Well from an auction purchase, you can go to those who conducted the auction and ask. Granted they will most likely not have one unless there were records of purchase in this case by the deceased.
NOW in a retail atmosphere you can ask the store management how they obtained it. And they should tell you. Especially woods of exotic nature. Like Red Wood Burls. There is a paper trail and they have to keep records until it is purchased or x number of months after they sold it.

Thanks for the info,I'll remember that in the future.I've been looking around at different sites and all the red color burls look the same to me.Is there a way to tell the difference.Cause it looks like it could be Cooliba or Red malee,Amboyna etc. as well as redwood. The auctioneer just called it a slab for making a clock.
