My son brought me some fresh walnut so I made a bowl or two.The first is 11" across and 4" deep and the second is 12" across and 3" deep.

Thats some very nice walnut. My favorite is the 2nd one but im a sucker for 2 tone. Kind of risky to turn them all the way to completion without letting them dry completely. I'd think bowls that big would definitely warp and/or crack pretty bad being turned green. Are you going to give your son 1 since he brought you the wood?

I was thinking that the bowls were a little green too. Fresh walnut usually has a slight purplish tint to it where as fully dried is more brown. And yep, it may be prone to warping or cracking.

Beautiful wood and bowls!

Dad had an old growth (4ft plus trunk) walnut tree cut down on our farm back in the late 60's and the fresh cut wood was beautiful with different hues of purple. As it air dried over the years, it turned a beautiful brown. But I loved the colors of fresh cut walnut. You can't stop the color changes as it dries.

Yes they are warping and that was the point behind turning them that thin about 3/8" on the larger and a 1/4" on the one with a rim. My wife loves the movement, she says it adds to the natural beauty of the wood.
Joebobber , my son took home 2 bowls, both live edge. Those were twice turned and dried in desiccant. They were from the last load he brought to me. On his next trip he asked if I could turn him a live edge bowl about 30" and I told him we will try but it would probably be a little smaller.
