I have some Redwood....

Has anyone ever made pens out of clear heart redwood?

How does it turn out (so to speak)?

Redwood is on the soft side. If it has dense grain pattern, it looks nice, especially with a bias cut. With fast growth wide growth rings -- pretty blah

What you got is great for dyeing and stabilizing. If you haven't tried this yet you might want to give it a try, warning it's so cool you may get addicted!

You can also try to apply dye on the lathe, for example you could use red, yellow and black alcohol dyes, one at a time. Apply the red, then sand, apply the black and then sand apply the black and, you get the picture. be carefully not to remove to much of the die. you should end up with a pen in flames. The order of the dye affects the outcome, so you may want to experiment.

Usually very soft, can be difficult to sand because growth rings range from very soft to hard. Also drinks finish like a sponge. I don't care for it, if you couldn't guess, LOL.

Redwood would need to be stabilized I would think. Think of it as a hard butter.
