I hate people that screw with my life an my friends. late last night I got a virus that grabbed my email account. this is just a pain.

If you get and email from me (cnccutter@gmail.com) that has a link in it DONT click on it!

I guess I get to spend the day trying to sort out this instead of earning a living

What I don't understand is why people spend all the time and energy writing the programs that create viruses instead of writing useful stuff. I guess it's that same 'criminal genius' you see in so many aspects of life.

I have a habit of just deleting anything with a link unless I knew it was coming, any file that has .exe, .bat and any executible file UNLESS I knew it was coming and this has saved my but more times than not. It could be one of your friends was hacked and they are using you email as the reply and sender so unless you can't login to your account to change your settings.

There is a technique by which hackers can make it look like an e-mail is from you but really is not. It is called e-mail spoofing and Wikipedia has a good summary of it here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_spoofing

One of the best things you can do to combat this is to turn on full e-mail headers in your e-mail application. When you learn to interpret full e-mail headers you can get a sense of the path the e-mail took getting to your computer and can often help you to determine how authentic an e-mail is. For example, if you saw an e-mail, ostensibly from the USA moving through several .ru (Russian) servers this may be a sign that the e-mail is not legitimate.

Eric if you are still using Facebook, check your upper box when you enter a web site, go to account on facebook make sure you check the box "HTTPS" for secure setting. Most are set to read HTTP which is not secure maybe thats how you got attack.

Where do you find this setting under Account?

Download "Malwarebytes" and run it.

Look in the upper right hand corner of the window for a green box. Click it and "run" the program. Once it is installed it may ask you to allow it to update the data files. Highly recommended that you let it update every time when it asks.

Run the program and see if it catches the damn virus for you. BTW, it can take a long while to run, but it seems to be extremely effective. The run time increases a good bit if your system uses several hard drives. Be sure to setup the program to check all your hard drives on your system. Best of all it is FREE.

After the program has run, do a cold boot of your system ... turn the PC off and then back on. It might also help you if you would run some defragmentation program as well.

The Malwarebytes program is a great utility to run once a week just for fun and giggles. I know many programmers that run it and even they have had their butts saved by it.

Best of luck on ridding your system of the problems.

I use Linux Ubuntu. Its free to download. No guarantee, but I haven't had any problems for about a year. Most viruses are written for Windows, as far as I know.
