Yes I did... but let me explain.

We had a family reunion today. One of my wife's cousins is a 2-star General USMC retired. He served for 35 years and retired in 2001. He moved out of his office at the pentagon approx. 4 hours before the parts of the highjacked plane struck his empty office on 9/11. He was shot down 5 times in Vietnam and wounded several times. He recounted today that by his count, he should be dead 144 times if not for God's angels.

Without fanfare, just as he did in the war, he takes care and helps many members of this family. No bragging or parades. He sees his duty and he does it.

He is a relative, a gentleman, a caretaker, a soldier, and a true American Hero. A man that I truly admire and respect.

I had my pens with me today at the reunion and in casual conversations, he said he really liked this one. So just as he does so many times, right before we left, I slipped it into a velvet bag and had my wife slip it into his pocket.

Thank you Gen. McCorkle and every other soldier current and retired for what you have done to keep us safe.

Beautiful pen. My first guess who made the blank would have been Jonathon. Very nice story and a class act move on your part.
 
You could not of given the "Beautiful pen" to a more deserving person. That is just a small token for what he has been through. Thank You.
 
It is folks like Major General McCorkle that make this country what it is. Thank you, sir for giving him that awesome looking pen. I know it will be treasured. Semper Fi!
 
Richard, your story has special meaning for me. A retired 2-star USAF SAC general, A.S. Mayes, gave me my start in a career in signmaking at a large int'l airport. He believed that a young 24-year old could open and operate this shop. I spent the next 33 years proving him right. Thanks to him, I recently retired from that airport, and now have the time to pursue my current passion, pen-making. Coming from a Marine Corps family, I can only say: thank you, sir, and Semper Fi.
 
That is a great moment in Gen. McCorkle's life, receiving a gift like he has given for so many years, both in and out of the Military. I just hope there are enough people available in the next few years to show care for the men and women coming home from the Iraq/Afghanistan area to the Land of the Free!
 
Do you know if Gen. McCorkle was the Commanding Officer in the New Orleans Base about 15 years ago? Sounds as though he had a really great 35 years. A great pen and a very good gift you gave him.

The more I read about our countries leaders the more I appreciate those who step forward. Reading Rumsfeld now. Finished Powel and Bush.
 
I just found out that I was mistaken in my original post. Fred has 3 stars and therefore is a Lt. General. Still very proud of him and his sacrifice for so many.
 
Great looking pen and nice gesture Richard. I am ex Air Force and know the gift will be appreciated. Reading it reminded me that my wife has a cousin whose husband is still serving, I'll have to find an extra nice one for him.
