Continuing to learn from Eagle by reverse engineering his work. All that work blown up on what was probably going to be the final pass with a tool.

I learned how to make the blank, but maybe I'm not yet a good enough turner to use a blank like this.

The weave was blue & red, and ended up looking purple until you looked closely.

This was my first blank in this style.

One trick I found helpful when turning Eagle's blanks: Turn the ends to the proper diameter first---leave the center alone.

Of course you have doused the blank with CA the day before turning.

As you turn the ends, continue to use thin CA, frequently. But the theory is that the center will give you stability to take off the ends.

It worked for me---several times.

Bummer Dennis --

But take a bow on a successful piece of reverse engineering. Well done!!!!

My guess is that a glue failure added to frustration.

There is always the next one -- and the reverse engineeirng work is done for that one.

Baby steps... Each time you learn a little more and progress a bit further.
Any chance you can shorten that and use it for something else?

Even Eagle blew up many of his blanks. Some when drilling, some when turning. Like Ed said, he never spared the CA but continued to come up with techniques to minimize the failures. Looks like you figured out the hard part which to me was avoiding gaps.

Its hard to see what the material is but it looks to curve or twist around the diamonds. If you made it it sure is a shame that happened. I had that happen 2 weeks ago, literally on the last pass with my skew, one of my scallops broke off. So I can feel your pain. I to think that the glue may have failed causing it to just get pealed off the tube. Sure would have looked cool.
I looked back up at your post and see you did make the blank.:frown:

THAT was gonna be a pretty pen too. Bummer! The colors remind me of the blue dot tail lights we used to have on our hot rods. Try again?

You now may appreciate another of Eagle's sayings: I ALWAYS KNOW when a blank is going to blow up!!!

Usually, ten seconds too late!

What a terrible way to get a lesson! That was a most beautiful piece of work. Thank you for sharing what is left of it.
