How to spault wood????

I have noticed a number of post referring to self-spaulting of various woods.

I have some maple and dogwood that I cut from my yard.

What can I do to start or encourage the spaulting process? How long does it take to spault most woods?

Around here we can lay whole or split logs on the ground cover with a tarp to keep rain off and block the sun. Takes anywhere from three or six months or up to a year depending upon, size, species, and weather.
