Also under system tools (windows XP) there is a program called character map. If you click on a character, it will tell you the alt code (if there is one). You can also just cut & paste the character.

Here's 1 I use a lot. Alt 0162 = ¢ I use it when I want to put in my 2¢ :wink:
 
If you use a Mac, just click on Edit and scroll down to Special Characters or press Option/Command/T. No more using * for ° as in 85°.
 
under system tools in most of the windows versions as I have 7/64 bit pro and I have the character map in the tray at the bottom of the screen. where it is always handy.
