Hey all,

I bought a blank today that is acrylic with bits of cereal (specifically shredded wheat) and need to know how to finish it.

This is my first time finishing something other that wood so the acrylic is new to me. From what I could see on other threads, Micromesh and other forms of sanding were recommended.

The problem with the blank I'm using is the cereal is soft and sort of desinigrate when it gets wet.

Anyone have experience with these blanks?

Thanks!
Doug

Use VERY SHARP skew to about 1/16" larger than finished size. Apply liberal thin CA, best in several coats. Let set for an hour or so. Turn or use "120grit gouge" very close to finished size, again get good coating of THIN CA on it and let set until the shredded wheat has drank it's fill. NOW, use normal sanding sequence to get to finished size and normal CA finish.

Voila!!!

Show your friends and take bows. Do NOT allow them to nibble your pen!!!!

After re-reading your post:
If this is your first "plastic" blank---don't do it!!! Turn some easier pieces first.
2) This is not acrylic, it is either polyresin or, more likely alumilite. Both are different from turning acrylic.
3) Either polyresin or alumilite are made much more difficult to turn with the shredded pieces (ANY shredded pieces) in them and the finishing is VERY LIKELY to need CA skills for filling voids.

And for everyone who figures this is all an ad for Exotics, we don't sell this product!! But I HAVE turned it.

Wow... I'm with Ed...

Don't let ANYTHING embedded be your first acrylic (pr, or otherwise)... I'm pretty experienced with acrylics and they can be tougher with anything in them!! Even money with just little bits of exposed paper can change how it works.

You will be ok eventually, but I think you're going to cause yourself some stress even if you get the CA soaked thing to work.

This is a pen I did a few months ago...I just used CA for this pen.
