Need help. I need to make a pen with horse hair. My brother is visiting next week. Haven't seen him in several years. His wife is a horse lover and has five Arabians. She is staying home with the horses. While Mike is here I would like to introduce him to pen turning and one of the pens should be a horse hair pen. How do I affix the hair to the tube? Youse guys who do the feather work must have some idea. Thank you for any help, in advance. :question:

He will bring a lock of hair, three inches long and a bundle the size of his thumb. :airplane:

The horse hair I tried before was from show horses. The ShowSheen we used was like baby oil and it stayed in the hair for weeks. I couldn't find anything that would stick to it.
 
LOL You beat me John!:biggrin: It's kinda like weaving, but with done with knots around a dowel (or brass tube!). If you google you should get lots of good info....Hope it helps!
 
Maybe a small braid wrapped around the tube in a helix pattern. Or multiple small braids glued and run lengthwise on the tubes, or individually wrapped braids wrapped around the tube.

I think the helix would look neat, I think it might look kind of like the rope blanks you see done with the pen wizard.

Yes, you helped. Thank you. I am trying to figure out what a "loop" is and how to use a "half hitch" on these.
I am thinking that laying out a layer of hair, put a bead of medium CA on the tube ends and then roll it on the layer of hair. Let that batch dry and then do it again to make sure of full coverage. Then get some resin and cast it.
 
John, I made a pen by making what I always called a "friendship bracelet" around a tube. I was told that this is the same as horse hair "hitching". Though I've never done it with horse hair, I may be able to help explain how I tied the knots to make the pattern. Here's the pen I did: http://www.penturners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=73993 I imagine if the hair is all the same color though, it wouldn't stand out as much.

Once completed cast the item. I didn't mention that part.
