to the tune of hooray for the bus driver.....

Was doing some casting today and had both pots full so I decided to start breaking down some wood while I waited. Well I went to the pile was I was working on burning because I had chipped away the bark and nothing was happening but rot so I tossed it. Well I decided to run a piece of Oak through the bandsaw and SHAZAM Spalt, and this is the less than great. The good stuff is in the DNA now. Then I cut a leg off of a Willow crotch and found some great creamy spalting going on. Needless to say I am very please with my burn pile.

Now for the sad news, I burned some of this Oak and Willow last weekend.

Sorry for the lousy cell phone but mama is on a Girl Scouts camping trip and took the camera.

Very Nice! I really like the different shades between the spalt lines. I have some spalted hackberry that I crossed cut and it looks so much better than the grain going long ways.

Know the feeling of burning good wood.... when we bought our home here in TN back in 2002 there was a dead tree standing just in front of where my shop was to go.... on a trip up for a job interview in 2004 I discovered the tree had fallen and landed on the hill just behind the house. When we moved up in 2005 I cut up the tree and burned about 75% of it, saving a few logs for the lathe. Since it had no leaves and I'm still learning to recognize barks, I thought it was an oak - it wasn't... it was a maple and the logs I saved were beautifully spalted maple... I've been sick about that for the past 7 years.

The first one has an image of an angel in the center - You saved an angel!!
All of the wood has some great spalting. Gonna make some good looking stuff. Enjoy.

I see her. I am going to cut her out and make a little charm or a lid to a box w/ her in the middle.
