I am getting back into turning after doing other things for a couple of years. I dug out the old Triton respirator and the batteries are useless. Getting replacements are near impossible, and I need a new face shield. (Fell down a flight of stairs with it.) I am looking at the Trend Pro, and the HobbyAir setups. I like the idea that the HobbyAir would give me completely fresh air and not depend upon filter maintainence for air quality. I also like the idea that I can just wear the mask without all of the weight of a helmet. (Although being tethered to a hose is a bit tricky.) The other thing I like about it is that I can use it when I finish or paint things. (The Trend and Triton are for dust, not chemicals)
How clunky is it to deal with? I assume that I would put the box on my back porch, and run the hose in through the basement window. This would keep the intake in fresh air, as it would be nowhere near the output of the dust collector, or any dust source. How hard is it to keep the hose clean? Is there any concern about mold, etc. in the hose? How long do these things last? Can I wear a face shield over the mask? (I don't turn anything much larger than a Turkey pot call with my lathe)
If anybody has any experience with these things, good or bad, I would like to hear about it before dropping a large amount of cash on one. It seems like a pretty good idea for my needs, but I would like to hear from somebody that has actually road tested one in the real world.
THanks,
Dave
