Here are many of the steps from wood arrival in my shop to hardware installation. The hardware has been removed and days of sanding before finishing have started.

I thought something positive might be helpful to you, it was and is for me. The box is for a friend built at my cost for wood and hardware only. I can't wait for finish and for when the sun ages the cherry to amazing deep color.

Wonderful project and I really appreciated all the pictures. I have admired these boxes as you have shown them in the past, but the pictures are helpful. I do believe you need more clamps... (unless 50-60 more were hiding). šŸ˜œ .
Very nice, and stay healthy šŸ˜· .

I ask $1250 for a specialty wood like cherry or walnut. Almost any wood I use must have good figure to great figure. I am not efficient in a high volume woodshop way. Sometimes it takes a day or two to figure out something that has worked well before and it not working. This time is was the wood, cherry. I had a couple of drilling experiences that said you must punch every hole deeply before drilling. That is usually not so with African mahogany or walnut, lesson learned. If I was ever stupid enough to add up the hours to make one of these I'd have to quit. People working in other countries make more per hour. It takes me no time at all to make a very sellable high end steampunk pen and it is without risk to me. Each step I have photographed was a definite opportunity to ruin the box. Hinge mortises, cutting the top or biscuits that dry fit easily and then with glue refuse to go in easily are pucker events in my shop. It is the challenge that makes me want to make another one. I think this is box 36.

On the good friend comment...

All my fishing friends have one of these boxes. Each paid for the cost of wood and hardware. This is for my newest fishing friend and he was due. I saw the wood in the stack of cherry that looked far to good to cut into cutting boards. A new rule for me is see great wood, buy it and figure out what to build with it later. His face appeared to me and I instantly knew what to do with the wood.

Finish line- at least coat number one. The figure begins to be apparent and the grain popped.

After an hour of careful sanding with 400 grit here is coat two. As I hoped the figure continues to enhance. It is very smooth which is a blessing and a curse. Errors in the finish will be more apparent I'm afraid.

Box, top and door are shown.
